Hillary Procknow

Assistant Professor
Department of Interior Design, LSU

Professor Dunn’s research investigates the development of methods and practices in teaching that create a dynamic cycle of critical thinking, discussion, reading, writing, and design application where students recognized connections and parallels between their developing graphic and spatial vocabulary and other disciplines, such as literature, film, philosophy, and everyday life. These connections have been made through the incorporation of learning communities in the early foundation courses.

Technology is also investigated as a means of representation and interpretation to develop ideas and concepts with meaning and layers of complexity. These tools allow novice design students to find avenues of expression beyond drawings and physical models.

Professor Dunn’s current research and creative activities are related to the topic of interactive/responsive design in the built environment. In teaching related research, he is investigating the current design studio environment; outcomes will propose new models for the studio environment. The physical setting of the design studio remains relatively unchanged over the past several decades, despite witnessing changes in trends, style, technology, education pedagogy, theory and practice. While the studio serves as the setting for the genesis of a student's designs and theories, it has had little influence in their development nor has it been transformed or altered as a result. This research is being completed through the Office of Novice Design Research.
